[the Companion Cube was tired. Too much destruction, too much scattered and conflicting energies everywhere. It had been silently panicking when the Castle came tumbling down, until everything got quiet. Then, it stopped panicking and got quiet too. It stayed quiet, until midnight rolled around, and it found itself in its hallway again.]
Oh. Good.
Everything is better, now.
[accidentally filtered to the Castle itself]
I am glad you are back.
I was worried.

It was panicking.
I was afraid.
But then it was alright.

[A pause; she may as well ask]
Do you know why the castle wanted us to live in the town... Cubie? I was awfully confused by it.
no subject
i know
it sent the threats outside
no subject
I would like to see you again.
no subject
Delta.
I hope I see Delta soon.

[It's not until well past noon that York comes wandering down to look for the Cube, however. Silly humans and their needing sleep.]

Hey there, Cube. You're looking a little beat-up.
It is likely the Cube was involved in the destruction last night.
Would you like to be cleaned?
no subject
I would like to be cleaned.
no subject
Thank you.
[York picks up the Cube and begins walking over to the stairs.]
I think the sink in the kitchen should be big enough. And he's right - you do look a little dirty. I bet you'll feel all better when you get cleaned up.
no subject
I am glad everything seems to be better.
I wonder if anything has changed.
no subject
No changes have been immediately detected, but it is likely some have occurred. Would you like me to tell you if any changes are noticed?
There we go. That should be good. Cube, you can go in water, right?
no subject
has it changed
are we still being kept?
I have never been in water before.
no subject
[York stares at Delta for a moment and Delta nods. So York grabs a dishtowel and dips one end in water, bringing it over to the Cube.]
Okay, I'm going to try this. It shouldn't do anything bad, but I want to test it first. [He wipes down a small area of one corner and waits for the water to air-dry while Delta talks.]
Yes. We are still being kept.
no subject
Good. Good.
I want to be kept.
and
I have never been in water before.
only acid
and fire

I would also like it if you remained. I enjoy your company.

They were so angry
so angry
I understand because it hurts and frightens
like the Test Chamber
but
It keeps us
it keeps them together
I thought they wanted to stay together
no subject
Yes and no. The attempt altered many of us in a potentially negative fashion. [He pauses.] For example, I...did not remember you.
Although the majority of us prefer to stay together, we are only happy to do so at minimal cost to ourselves.
no subject
Those who were sent outside.
Something happened to them?
Made less. Or smaller.
no subject
Correct. Our personalities were altered. Those who remained were upset by this, and attacked the castle in retaliation. We were returned to normal and the castle also returned to normal.
no subject
[another long moment of quiet processing] I understand.
no subject

I have never been cleaned.
The dirt
and fire and ash and gravy
is gone.
I feel better after getting clean. [repeating York's words and logging them]
no subject
[Delta, on the other hand, sounds somewhat offended.] Gravy?
no subject
It fell on me.
Food fell on me.
[yeah, the Cube still had remnants of the indoor gravy-storm in its crevices, from so long ago]
no subject
[Delta sighs quietly. There's no way the Cube will understand half that sentence.] Would you like to go anywhere?
no subject
I would like to stay with York and Delta.
no subject
Sure thing. You can hang out with us today.
no subject
[it was clean, it was happy again, and it didn't want any of that to change just yet]
no subject
Yeah...Yeah, no problem!
[So York will carry it around with him, whatever he decides to do today.]
