I keep hearing about Christmas, from what I've gathered it seems like another holiday? Is that right?

Pretty much. There's a lot of history, but it's basically about giving each other presents and spending time with your loved ones.

They're not actually bad - actually, they're pretty good - but hearing them every time you go out from late October onwards gets...ugh. Pretty annoying.
